Plugins are a great way to add more functionality to your WordPress website and keep it performing at its best. With tens of thousands of plugins out there, and thousands of articles on “the best” ones, you may be a bit overwhelmed on where to start.

If you’re a creative entrepreneur with a WordPress website wondering, “Where do I even begin when it comes to plugins?” Stick around!

In this post, I’m guiding you through 7 types of WordPress plugins you should have installed for your creative business website along with links to my top recommendations.

1. For SEO:

We’re all trying to get our message out there, am I right? Having a plugin installed for SEO will help tremendously with your search engine ranking and get your website in front of the right people. If you’re a beginner, you may find it helpful to install an “out-of-the-box” plugin that automatically does the work after you install. Then as you become more experienced, you can fine-tune everything to fit your optimization needs.

My recommendation: All-In-One SEO Pack

2. For Optimizing Images:

When it comes to websites, you want to make sure everything is loading fast. If you have a lot of large image files on your pages and posts, it could cause your site to load extremely slow and cause your visitors to leave your site before it even fully loads (i.e. higher bounce rates). Find a plugin that automatically optimizes each new image as you upload them. It will also be beneficial if it resized existing photos in bulk as well.

My recommendation: WP Smush

3. For Website Security:

Honestly, nothing helps me sleep better at night knowing my website is in good hands (That’s why I host my website with Flywheel). If you don’t have a highly reliable hosting provider, I would consider adding that second layer of security. The last thing you want to worry about are hackers and spammers ruining all of your hard work.

My recommendation: iThemes Security

4. For Email Opt-ins:

Well-designed opt-in forms that are on-brand are key to creating trust for your readers and turning them into subscribers. Find a plugin that allows you to display your email boxes in beautiful, unique ways and on any page or post. Be sure to check the compatibility list to see if it will work with your email provider.

My recommendation: Bloom

5. For Easy Page-Building:

If you decide you need to expand your website with new pages, you could benefit from an easy page-builder plugin. One that allows you to quickly whip up beautiful new pages or posts without too much hassle and requires little to no coding experience.

My recommendation: The Divi Builder

*You can use it on any WordPress theme, but if you’re already using Divi as your theme, you don’t need to install this. It’s already built in!

6. For Backups:

If your hosting provider doesn’t already provide daily backups, you should really consider installing a plugin that takes care of this for you. Even if you do have daily back-ups enabled, it’s never a bad idea to have your backups saved in more than one place just in case anything were to ever happen.

My recommendation: UpdraftPlus

7. For Social Sharing:

You’re working extremely hard to push out great content, but what good does it do if no one is able to share it? It’s important that you’re making it super easy for people to share your content on Desktop AND Mobile. Find a plugin that enables social sharing from the side of your posts and pages, above and below your content, and directly on top of your images. The more options the better.

My recommendation: Monarch

Whether you choose to go with my recommendation or not, here are some requirements EVERY plugin should meet before installing:

It has a 4-5 star rating and positive reviews.
It’s been updated within the last 3 months.
It’s compatible with the latest version of WordPress.
It will help you achieve your business goals.
